Putin leaves New Delhi after Brics meetings focused on trade and global conflicts

Thedeshpost.com – Russian President Vladimir Putin departed New Delhi on Sunday after taking part in the two-day Brics Summit hosted by India, concluding a visit marked by multilateral discussions, a business forum address and talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The summit brought leaders together at a time when trade routes, energy supplies and regional conflicts remain central concerns for many countries. During his stay, Putin attended two Brics sessions and visited the Bharat Innovates exhibition at Bharat Mandapam, where India showcased innovation and development-related initiatives.

Business forum address highlights sanctions concerns

Putin also spoke at the Leaders’ Session of the Brics Business Forum. In his remarks, he criticised Western countries for employing trade restrictions and diplomatic pressure as tools of state-level interference.

He said Russia had faced more than 30,000 sanctions, presenting the figure as evidence of the scale of economic restrictions imposed on the country.

“More than 30,000 sanctions have been slapped on Russia, which is twice as much as the number of all sanctions against all other countries of the world combined,” the Russian President said.

The comments placed economic policy at the centre of the wider Brics conversation. The grouping has increasingly discussed ways to deepen cooperation among member countries, particularly in commerce, investment, technology and development, while its members continue to hold differing positions on several international issues.

Modi and Putin review bilateral cooperation

On the sidelines of the summit, Modi and Putin held a bilateral meeting that followed another interaction less than two weeks earlier in Bishkek, where both leaders were attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit on August 31.

The New Delhi meeting covered stronger trade links and the implementation of the Programme for Economic Cooperation 2030. The leaders also reviewed work across infrastructure, energy, technology, defence and cultural exchanges.

“Delighted to meet President Putin in Delhi, less than two weeks after our meeting in Bishkek. During today’s meeting, we talked about closer trade ties, including implementation of the Programme for Economic Cooperation 2030. Cooperation in areas like infrastructure, energy, technology, defence, culture and more. India’s efforts during our Brics Presidency aimed at furthering the welfare of our planet,” PM Modi said in a post on X.

The discussion underlined the breadth of India-Russia engagement. Trade and economic cooperation were a major focus, but the agenda also reflected long-standing links in sectors such as energy and defence, alongside interest in expanding cooperation in technology, infrastructure and cultural activity.

Regional tensions and maritime trade discussed

Modi and Putin additionally exchanged views on major regional and global developments, including conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea region. Those conflicts have had consequences beyond the areas directly involved, affecting maritime commerce and raising concerns about the safety and security of Indian seafarers.

India’s position, reiterated by Modi during the meeting, was that dialogue and diplomacy should guide efforts to end conflicts. He said India was prepared to support peace initiatives.

The emphasis on maritime security is significant for India because sea routes are vital to international commerce. Disruptions, security risks and instability along shipping corridors can affect the movement of goods and create uncertainty for crews operating in affected waters.

Other leaders also depart

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali left New Delhi earlier on Sunday. Their departures followed a summit that gave participating leaders opportunities for both group deliberations and separate bilateral engagements.

Putin’s visit combined the formal Brics agenda with discussions aimed at advancing India-Russia cooperation. The meetings in New Delhi placed trade, sectoral partnerships and international stability at the forefront, while also highlighting India’s stated preference for diplomacy in addressing ongoing conflicts.
